Army Staff Sgt. Joseph A. Green, III, 36, of Norfolk, Va., was one of six service members and a Department of Defense civilian selected to be honored during National POW/MIA Recognition Day on Friday.

The group traveled to New York to participate in the New York Stock Exchange's Closing Bell ceremony recognizing service members who were held as prisoners of war or are still missing, and their families.

Later, the New York Yankees also acknowledged the significance of the day by hosting the delegation at a home plate tribute to service members, past and present as well as a patriotic salute on the field during the National Anthem.

Green, is the noncommissioned officer in charge of the Port Mortuary's Family Support Team at Dover Air Force Base, Del.

He is one of more than 600 Department of Defense (DoD) people dedicated to the worldwide mission of accounting for the more than 83,000 missing service members from conflicts as far back as World War II.

POW/MIA Recognition Day serves as a reminder to recognize the nation's service members who were held as prisoners of war or are still missing, and their families. Annual state and local ceremonies throughout the country remember missing service members, culminating with a proclamation from the President on Capitol Hill.

Green enlisted the U.S. Army in 2003. His parents, Joseph A. Green, Jr., and Terrie Green live in Norfolk. Green is a 1994 graduate of Bob Jones High School.
