Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations is a Field Operating Agency under the Deputy Chief of Staff, Manpower, Personnel and Services, Headquarters Air Force. AFMAO has global responsibility for all Air Force mortuary matters for current and past conflicts, operates the nation's sole port mortuary, and provides global contingency mortuary response teams in support of Air Force and combatant command requirements.
Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations is comprised of five branches: the Port Mortuary; Air Force Mortuary Affairs; Past Conflicts; Operations; and Programs and Facilities. Approximately 75 full-time staff and deployers from all branches of military service support the 24-hour operation of returning America's fallen heroes home, preparing them for their final resting place and ensuring families have the support they need during this critical time.
